Career Paths for Women in the Nigerian Government - Part 1

Career Paths for Women in the Nigerian Government - Part 1

The Nigerian Government has made concerted efforts to pave way for women in Civil Service. In this article, we will outline some of the career paths for women who are considering a career in various thematic areas within the Civil Service.

1. Women Affairs

Women Affairs is a Ministry solely established to promote the development of all Nigerian women and ensure they enjoy equal rights. The objectives of the Ministry include: stimulating action to promote civic, political, social and economic participation of women; coordinating and monitoring women's programmes; providing technical and financial support to women non-governmental organisations, especially the National Council of Women Societies. The Ministry of Women Affairs is required to review substantive and procedural laws that affect women in the country.

In a Ministerial Forum in Abuja, the Minister of Women Affairs, Dame Pauline Tallen informed that despite the achievements marked by the Ministry, it has fallen short of attaining its overarching target. The Minister highlighted that,

“our target is to see that women are represented in every sector of the economy.”

2. Education

Education is key to economic development, and as a result, it is in every woman's best interest to make an impact in Nigeria through education. It has been often highlighted that women, particularly in rural areas, are less likely to be educated than men. In some parts of Nigeria, women are not actively encouraged to pursue an education. However, men and women in Nigeria are equally encouraged to pursue careers in the education sector.

3. Health

The health sector in Nigeria is also open to women to build a career. Women can work as health educators, community health workers, and in health research for the government, among others. The Federal Ministry of Health and state Ministries of Health also employ women in various roles such as policy development, management and administration. Here are a few Job opportunities from the Ministry of Health in Nigeria

4. Agriculture

The agricultural sector is one of the most important sectors in Nigeria, particularly for women. It is widely known that women, especially in rural areas, are responsible for a large portion of Nigeria’s agricultural output. Women make up 60% of Nigerian farmers and contribute 50% to Nigeria’s GDP through agriculture alone! Women usually grow crops for family consumption, but also sell excess produce at local markets to avoid waste and gain additional income.

Conclusion

Truth be told, there is a wide range of career opportunities for women to consider in the Civil Service. These opportunities also come with long-term job security and promote expertise in certain thematic areas within the Civil Service. Also, women who are considering a career path in Nigerian Civil Service do not have to worry about the difference in payment of entitlements and salaries in comparison to their male counterparts, as the Nigerian Government pays workers on the basis of Grade Level and not gender.

There are indeed various expanding career paths for women in the Civil Service. It is through these career paths that women have the opportunity to formulate and influence favourable policies which will contribute to the advancement of women in Nigeria.
